1
Sword of Black Heritage Flag
The Moorish boarding sword is a feature of the Black American Heritage Flag, which was created to represent African-Americans at the height of the Civil Rights Movement. It represents the collective strength and authority of the African-American community all over the world.
2
Star of Juneteenth Flag
The star and the nova are the central elements of the Juneteenth flag. Juneteenth is observed on June 19 of each year to commemorate the day the last remaining enslaved people in America learned of the abolishment of slavery.
3
Little Dipper / North Star
One of the stars of the Little Dipper is Polaris, the North Star, which always tells us where North is. In the 19th century, slaves were taught to look for Polaris and find their way northward, where operatives of the Underground Railroad would help them escape.
4
Liberty Torch
Ben carries with him the same Liberty Torch the Statue of Liberty raises proudly with her right hand. The Liberty Torch represents enlightenment and the unerring path to freedom and justice.
5
Arrows represent escape to Native territories
The fistful of arrows Ben carries represents the exodus of slaves into Native American soil. Despite slavery's persistence under the wing of most Native American tribes, African-Americans thrived and enjoyed a taste of freedom their former masters failed to provide.
6
Underground Railroad
The railroad track Ben travels on is symbolic of the Underground Railroad. The Railroad was an organized network of abolitionists and supporters who helped transport over a hundred thousand slaves to freedom in the 19th century.
7
Big Dipper
The Big Dipper, also known as "The Drinkin' Gourd", is a prominent asterism that helped slaves locate the North star. Slaves were taught to "follow the Drinkin' Gourd" northward and find Peg Leg Joe, a conductor for the Underground Railroad who would bring them to freedom.
